St. Louis, MO – Union grocery workers at area Schuck's, Dierberg's and Shop-N-Save stores are now on strike. More than 4,000 members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union voted to strike this morning. That number equaled about 72% of all ballots cast, which was more than was needed for a job action.
Cheers went up at the America's Center as UFCW local 655 president Bob Kelley announced the results. Speaking to reporters later, Kelley asked St. Louisans to stay away from the three chains the strike affects.
He says the Teamsters and other unions have voiced their support for the strike.
The union will be picketing Shop & Save stores, but not Schnucks or Dierberg's. Still, union officials fear management will lock out workers at the stores not picketed. If that happens, picket lines will also go up at those stores.
