Chicago, Ill. –

More than a dozen hopefuls are trying to fill the seat that will be vacated next year by U-S Senator Peter Fitzgerald. It's an interesting bunch from across the political spectrum; but even in this group, one candidate's appearance sets him apart.

He practices Sikh (pronounced seek'), an Indian religion which requires the candidate to wear a turban and a full beard. If elected, he would be the first Indian American, and the first Sikh, in the U-S Senate.

Illinois Public Radio's Catrin Einhorn has the first in a series of profiles of U-S Senate candidates in Illinois.
