St. Louis, MO – Monday (Labor Day) is the last day visitors at the St. Louis Zoo can go inside the giant birdcage known as the 1904 Flight Cage. The zoo is closing it for a year Tuesday for renovations.
The cage was supposed to be moved to National Zoo in Washington after the 1904 World's Fair, but the city of St. Louis exercised its option to buy it for $6,000. That move eventually led to the zoo's creation.
The cage measures 228 feet long, 84 feet wide, and 50 feet high.
