Committee Will Tackle Issue of School Funding

By T. Weber, KWMU

St. Louis, Mo. – Some Missouri lawmakers will be in Jefferson City tomorrow discussing school funding.

The interim committee was formed this year to debate possible changes in the way schools get state funding. Many committee members say there's agreement that things need to change.

Republican Senator Anita Yeckel of St. Louis says too much school funding relies on property taxes which drives some people out of developing areas.

"And so you have a home that's 50 years old that's being compared now to a brand new home that's $300,000. And that impacts the value of the other property and I don't think that's fair. But when you talk to the assessors, they're just following the law," Yeckel said.

It's up to the committee to decide whether to write legislation that might revamp the system. Tomorrow's is just the first of a series of meetings the committee is planning.
