Harris-Stowe president to be honored in D.C. on eve of retirement

This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, Sept. 13, 2011 - Retiring Harris-Stowe State University President Dr. Henry Givens Jr. will be honored in Washington, D.C. next week as he is inducted into the Missouri Walk of Fame.

Givens has been selected by U.S. Rep. William Lacy Clay, D-St. Louis, as a 2011 honoree. The Sept. 23 reception and presentation is part of the annual legislative caucus sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.

Clay and U.S. Rep. Emaneul Cleaver II, D-Kansas City, are the honorary chairmen of the event.

Givens is being honored for his 32 years as president of Harris-Stowe; he is retiring Sept. 30.

"I am flattered and humbled to be recognized by Congressmen Clay and the Missouri Walk of Fame," said Givens in a statement. "Harris-Stowe has had a long-standing partnership with the Congressional Black Caucus and has supported their efforts for many, many years. It is my distinct privilege to be included among Missouri's most prominent individuals. I am truly honored."
