Benld, Ill. – Classes have been canceled this week at an elementary school in Macoupin County northeast of St. Louis after major structural damage was discovered.
Officials at Benld Elementary say the collapse of an old mine deep underneath the building was probably the cause.
Over the weekend Principal Angela Turcol found large cracks the in walls, floors and ceiling.
The school has about 700 students and 30 employees.
