Drew lawyers ask federal judge to toss conviction

By AP/KWMU

Los Angeles – A defense attorney has asked a federal judge in Los Angeles to dismiss the conviction of Lori Drew.

A jury found Drew guilty in November of three misdemeanor counts of accessing computers without authorization for setting up a fake MySpace account that was used to harass 13-year-old Megan Meier. Megan hanged herself in 2006.

Judge George Wu is expected to hear defense arguments today (Thurs.) and may also issue a ruling.

Drew's lawyers contend it's not a federal crime to violate the service terms of a Web site.

If the judge upholds the verdicts, Drew could face prison time and fines.
