DNR asks lawmakers to fix Water Commission law

By Tom Weber, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is asking lawmakers to fix a quirk in the law that drew the ire of the Sierra Club this week.

The environmental group noted the law says the Clean Water Commission cannot have any more than three members of the same party. Four Republicans currently sit on the commission.

But the governor's office noted that requirement was in place when the commission only had six members, and lawmakers forgot to change that part when they added a member.

DNR wants lawmakers to instead allow no party to have more than a simple majority, which would mean four people in the case of a seven member board.

The Sierra Club had asked this week to fix the matter, or they'd ask the attorney general to rule all the commission's actions invalid
