St. Louis, MO – The storms that moved through the Midwest Sunday are blamed for three deaths in Missouri and one in Illinois.
A man who was walking in Castlewood State Park near Ballwin died when a tree fell on him.
Another man in Illinois died in Fairview Heights when part of a clothing store roof collapsed. The victim was Delancy Moore, 54, of East St. Louis.
Significant damage is also reported in the Missouri Bootheel. Pemiscot County dispatcher Dorothy Hale said one person died after a tornado struck a rural home near Beering, Mo. She also said the storm "destroyed just about everything" in nearby Caruthersville, the Pemiscot County seat.
Caruthersville Mayor Diane Sayre said there were no known fatalities in the city, but search and rescue operations continue. The city of 6,700 had no power or water, and suffered "significant damage."
Earlier, a 42-year-old man died when straight-line winds knocked over his mobile home near Circle City in Stoddard County.
Ameren spokesmen say more than 100,000 customers were without power Monday morning; 43,000 of those were in Illinois and the rest in Missouri. At its peak, about 270,000 were without power.
