MO Senate debates IDs into wee hours

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – Missouri State Senators debated into early this morning (Wednesday) legislation that would require people to show a photo ID to vote.

The main impasse has been over when such a requirement should take effect.

Supporters say photo ID's would cut down on voter fraud, and Republicans want it in place this year. But critics say it would be a hassle that discourages people from voting. Democrats want to give voters until 2008 to learn about the requirement.

The Senate took a break this morning after hours of talk to see if a compromise is possible.

Senate Minority Leader Maida Coleman (D-St. Louis) said Republicans' determination to implement the changes this year means they're only trying to help U.S. Senator Jim Talent get re-elected by confusing voters.

Senate Majority Leader Charlie Shields (R-St. Joseph) said Republicans simply want to act quickly to end fraud at the polls.
