Jefferson City, MO – Democrats in the Missouri House are propose a new college scholarship program for low-income students.
They want to use part of the money from a potential sale of some of the assets of the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MOHELA). The sale is expected to bring in $450 million; Gov. Matt Blunt has already proposed spending $100 million of that on scholarships.
Democratic House member Rachel Storch of St. Louis says that's more than enough money to help cover the cost of higher education for students who sign a pledge promising not to use drugs or alcohol or commit a crime. She says those scholarships would pick up the remaining cost after federal aid and other scholarships.
Democrats say their plan should cost about $10 million a year.
