Former IL Lt. Gov. Wood has breast cancer recurrence

By AP/KWMU

Chicago, Ill. – Former Illinois Lt. Governor Corrine Wood has had a recurrence of breast cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

Wood was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997 and had a mastectomy that year. She was declared cancer-free in 2002.

In 1999, she became the first woman in Illinois history to serve as Lt. Governor.

The recurrence was found during the recent holidays and she's been undergoing high-dose chemotherapy since the first of the year.

Wood also lost a bid for Governor in 2002. Since then, she's served as Vice President of the board of the Cancer Treatment Research Foundation. She's also a board member of the Chicago Stock Exchange.
