Attorney to discuss Nuremberg Trial

By Kevin Lavery, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – One of the last surviving members of the U.S. team that prosecuted Nazi war criminals in the late 1940's will speak about that experience Thursday night.

St. Louis attorney Whitney R. Harris personally interrogated several defendants, including Rudolf Hoss, the commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

The Nuremberg Trial was the first to ever seek retribution for war crimes and Harris says its legacy survives today.

"There is now, of course, the International Criminal Court, which is functioning in the crimes at Darfur, Harris said. "So, we're making progress in bringing the rule of law to govern the atrocities committed in the course of military aggressions."

Harris will appear in conjunction with the local observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day. This year's event marks the 60th anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe.
