Springfield, Ill – Illinois State Senator Steve Rauschenberger said he's withdrawing his name from consideration to replace Jack Ryan in the U.S. Senate race.

In a statement released Thursday, Rauschenberger said he's honored that so many people were interested in having him represent the Republican Party. But he says right now he needs to keep his full attention on serving in the Illinois House.

Rauschenberger's announcement came just hours after U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert said he viewed the Elgin Republican as the "best person" to step in as the GOP's candidate.

Rauschenberger was among several Republicans being considered as a possible replacement for Ryan, who left the race after the release of embarrassing sex club allegations.

State Republican leaders are expected to name their choice next week to face Democrat Barack Obama in the fall.
