The online marketplace for health insurance – one of the major provisions of the federal Affordable Care Act – goes live Tuesday, October 1. With the hours winding down until enrollment begins, we wanted to provide a platform for your questions to be answered.
Our guest for this segment is uniquely suited to answer those questions. As the consortium administrator for the Kansas City Regional Office of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Nanette Foster Reilly and her office have been in charge of implementing many of the provisions of the Affordable Care Act in the Midwest, including Missouri.
In addition to giving an overview of who qualifies and how to enroll, Reilly answered questions about the feasibility of Medicare users shopping on the marketplace for supplemental insurance, what Missourians who don't qualify for subsidies because they would have been covered under the Medicaid expansion can do (not much), and what can be done to lower costs until the ACA provision about pre-existing conditions kicks in January 1 (again, not much).

People in both Illinois and Missouri can enroll by visiting the federal marketplace website beginning October 1. The consumer call center is already available at 1-800-318-2596, but enrollment assistance will not be available until the marketplace opens Tuesday. Beginning October 1, the website will also provide a list of locations in your area where you can find certified application counselors to guide you through the enrollment process.
