Nixon says state can't afford planned children's health expansion

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

Jefferson City, Mo. – Newly released records show Gov. Jay Nixon's staff was planning to add tens of thousands of children to Missouri's health care rolls. But the plan was put on
hold because of budget troubles.

Documents provided to The Associated Press show the Department of Social Services identified six ways to increase enrollment in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance program.

The proposal would have added nearly 42,000 people, mostly children.

When he ran for governor, Nixon pledged to expand health coverage for children, but the governor now says the state cannot afford the $47 million dollar cost.
