St. Louis – There are no reports of damage after a small earthquake shook parts of the St. Louis area Monday morning.
It measured 2.7 on the Richter Scale. The U.S. Geological Survey said it happened at 6:25 a.m., and was centered in Fenton in southwest St. Louis County.
Saint Louis University geophysics professor Bob Herrmann said the quake was not related to the larger one last month centered in southeastern Illinois.
He said while earthquakes are a hazard in the St. Louis area, the danger is greater to the east and south.
"We have to worry about larger earthquakes over in the Wabash Valley in southwestern Indiana and southeastern Illinois, and certainly we have to be concerned about big earthquakes occurring down at New Madrid," Herrmann said.
Herrmann said Monday's quake was not caused by the New Madrid fault in southeastern Missouri.
The U.S. Geological Survey has more information about the earthquake on its website.
