Longtime Post-Dispatch baseball writer Rick Hummel is now officially a baseball hall of famer after Sunday's induction ceremony.

Hummel received the J.G. Spink Award for writing. During his brief speech at a ceremony that also saw players Cal Ripkin, Jr. and Tony Gwynn enshrined, Hummel thanked a host of people, including his family, the newspaper where he works, and the late Post-Dispatch sports editor Bob Broeg.

Royals announcer Matthews received the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting excellence.

Hummel was hired by the Post-Dispatch in 1971 and started covering the Cardinals in 1973. He was named the newspaper's national baseball columnist in 2002. Matthews broadcast the first game the Royals played in 1969.
