Missouri Senate sends anti-abortion bill to governor

By Marshall Griffin, KWMU

Jefferson City, Mo. – The Missouri Senate passed the Abortion Omnibus bill on the final day of the legislative session Friday. The bill now goes to Governor Blunt, who said he'll sign it.

The measure places stricter regulation on abortion clinics in Missouri, and fund the state's Alternatives to Abortion program.

The most controversial provision bans Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers from teaching sex education in public schools, in favor of abstinence-based courses.

Senator Tim Green, D-St. Louis County, voted against the bill for that reason. Green said he is pro-life, but he blasted the groop Missouri Right to Life for pressuring lawmakers to pass the legislation.

"You people have dictated too much in this building for too long, and you need to start worrying about these kids, and you don't," Green said.

But Senator Delbert Scott, R-Lowry City, said having Planned Parenthood teach sex ed would be like Philip Morris teaching anti-smoking classes.
