St. Louis, MO – Administrators at St. Louis University appear to have reached a compromise with student editors over a new charter for the student newspaper.
Members of SLU's administration claim they were never trying to silence the sometimes critical voice of the University News, rather they only wanted to improve the quality of the paper.
The paper's current Editor, Katie Lewis, says the University's insistence on being able to hire and fire editors was not palatable in any form.
"We can't operate like that," Lewis said. "We can't be a fair, opinionated voice within our editorials if we're not free to develop our own opinions and discuss them."
A redrafted charter has been sent back to the students allowing them to select editors pending ratification from the office of student development.
Lewis says those nominations could only be denied in the event of misconduct on a student's record.
A spokesman for the university was not immediately available for comment
