Jefferson City, Mo. – Incoming state auditor Susan Montee says one of her first acts will be an audit of the state's student loan authority.
The Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority has been in the news regularly over the past year. Governor Matt Blunt first proposed selling it entirely, but then agreed with a plan to sell many of MOHELA's assets and direct money generated to college construction projects.
The latest plan would send $350 million in MOHELA money to public colleges and universities over six years.
The Legislature is expected to consider the matter next year.
Montee says quasi-governmental groups like MOHELA don't have enough oversight, and legislators need to know what they're dealing with.
