By AP/KWMU

Chicago, Ill. –

A new law signed Sunday aims to make more scholarships available to college students from middle income families, as well as low-income.

The state of Illinois will offer $500 grants will be available to sophomores, juniors and seniors from families making less than $200,000 a year, if the student attends a public college or university in Illinois.

The law also provides an additional $34.4 million for grants for low-income students.

The measure was the result of a compromise in the Legislature between proponents of more relief for poor families for college and supporters of more help for middle-income families.
