Road construction continues Tuesday after holiday break

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – After a three-day break, construction workers will be back out on Missouri roads Tuesday

This is the busiest season ever for road construction in Missouri. In the St. Louis area alone, crews are working on about 250 different projects.

MODOT spokesman Chris Sutton says much of the activity is a result of a 2004 change to the state constitution that requires fuel taxes be used only for road maintenance.

"Many of those projects are resurfacing type projects," Sutton said. "They're preservation projects, taking care of what we have. There are very few expansion projects that are going on."

Sutton says at most construction sites, workers reopened lanes for the weekend to accommodate holiday traffic. But the orange barrels will be back up tomorrow morning when the highway crews get back to work.
