Jefferson City, MO – A judge on Tuesday ordered the state of Missouri to stop charged disabled people two dollars a year for the windshield signs they need to park in reserved spots.
The court ruled the fee is discriminatory because it's making disabled people pay for an accommodation that's required by law.
The case has been before several courts in recent years. Scott Holste, a spokesman for Attorney General Jay Nixon, says he believes the change will be made soon. He says a few state departments need a chance to communicate on the matter.
One of the plaintiffs' lawyers, Fred Switzer, called the ruling a victory, but also noted the courts had previously determined that reimbursements will not be given to those who paid the fees in the past.
