Springfield, Mo. abortion clinic shuts down

By AP/KWMU

Springfield, MO – A clinic where abortions are performed in Springfield, Mo. has gone out of business.

The closing comes just weeks after the Springfield Healthcare Center won a temporary restraining order against a new abortion law.

That law requires doctors who perform abortions to have clinical privileges at a hospital within 30 miles. The clinic had argued the law could force it to close, because its doctor was based in St. Louis.

But clinic administrator Michelle Collins said Thursday the lawsuit had nothing to do with why the clinic suddenly shut down. She said it was a business decision, but wouldn't elaborate.

The closure leaves just two clinics in Missouri where abortions are performed - in St. Louis and Columbia.
