Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that it's unconstitutional to force capital murder defendants to appear before juries in chains and shackles.
The high court threw out the Missouri court's sentence of Carman Deck on a 7-2 vote.
Deck was shackled when he faced a jury that put him on death row for killing two people during a robbery in the eastern Missouri town of De Soto in 1996.
The court had already held that people on trial can be shackled only if prosecutors have a strong argument for it.
The latest decision involves sentencing hearings.
