Belleville, Ill. – One of the Metro-East's longest-serving leaders will step down next month.
John Baricevic did not run again for St. Clair County Board Chair.
He's overseen a number of projects in his 14 years. One of the biggest was Mid-America Airport.
Critics say hundreds of millions of dollars was wasted on an airport with little passenger service.
But Baricevic told KWMU's Tom Weber the airport gives Scott Air Force Base a better chance of staying open during the next round of closures. The base almost closed last decade.
