Jefferson City, Mo. – Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon has decided not to weigh in on whether St. Louis can hold an early voting period for the November election.

St. Louis officials have interpreted a state law to authorize early voting -- even though Secretary of State Matt Blunt says it does not.

Before progressing with their plan, St. Louis officials had hoped Nixon would issue an opinion on whether early voting was allowed.

But Nixon cited Blunt's position as chief election official and said it would do little good for Nixon to offer his own interpretation.

Nixon suggested the issue could only be solved by the Legislature or the courts.

There was no immediate word from St. Louis officials on their next step.
