Jefferson City, MO – Missouri's Amtrak passenger train service is once again in jeopardy.
Officials from the state Department of Transportation say one of the twice-daily trains between St. Louis and Kansas City could be shut down by the end of the month, if the state does not come up with more money.
Amtrak service was facing a similar threat at this same time one year ago. But the Legislature came up with more money, and Amtrak agreed to impose a five-dollar surcharge on Missouri trips to help continue the service.
That surcharge remains in place.
This year's budget includes $5 million for Amtrak subsidies. But MoDOT is asking lawmakers for an additional $885,000 to keep both trains running.
