La Crosse, Wisc. – The Associated Press reports St. Louis's incoming archbishop has told at least three Wisconsin lawmakers he would have to ask them to not present themselves to receive sacraments, if they don't vote more in line with Catholic Church policies.
Bishop Raymond Burke tells the lawmakers in letters they risk their spiritual well being if they don't change their opinion on abortion and other issues.
One letter went to Democratic state Senator Julie Lassa. It shows how Lassa voted on several abortion-related bill, including her vote against a measure that would have let health care workers opt out of procedures that violate their beliefs.
Lassa says it's her duty to represent people of all faiths and that she's troubled by the letter.
Burke will leave the La Crosse, Wisconsin diocese to become St. Louis's Archbishop next month.
