St. Louis – Missouri Department of Transportation Director Henry Hungerbeeler has resigned, saying the agency could benefit from new leadership.
In a report last month, a citizens' advisory panel urged the department to reorganize top management and implement other major reforms.
The report did not mention Hungerbeeler by name, but panel member and St. Charles County Executive Joe Ortwerth said the director made positive contributions.
"He was very dedicated to seeing that Missouri motorists were getting the best value out of our transportation system that they could," Ortwerth said. "At the same time, it's clear that we've got a lot further to go in winning back public confidence."
MODOT began facing major public criticism in 1998 after abandoning a 15-year road building plan.
Hungerbeeler will leave the department June 1.
