St. Louis, MO – Two of the 32 Americans who were named Rhodes Scholars on Sunday attend Washington University. Bethany Ehlmann, of Edwardsville, and Allison Gilmore, from Minnesota, will go to the University of Oxford in England next fall.
That will be the 100th anniversary of the first class of American Rhodes Scholars being named in 1904.
As a collaborating scientist on the NASA Mars exploration mission, Ehlmann will travel in January to the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Cal. There she will be part of a team of scientists and engineers who will navigate the Mars rover and determine research priorities.
Ehlmann also is a competitive Frisbee player, a leader in student government and a Goldwater Scholar, Udall Scholar, and Compton Scholar.
Also from Washington University is Allison Gilmore, of Eagan, Minnesota. The mathematics major is a Byrd and Compton Scholar. She also leads the campus Stop-the-War coalition. Both want to become professors.
