St. Louis Residency Bill for Police Advances

Jefferson City, MO – Police officers in St. Louis won't have to call the city home, if a bill passed by a state House committee moves forward.

The House Crime Committee voted to get rid of the requirement that city cops must live within the city limits.

No St. Louis lawmakers are on the committee. But Representative Yvonne Wilson of Kansas City supports the rule, saying it's a good idea for cops to live in the same city they serve.

We have a much better relationship between the citizens of the city and those police officers, Wilson said.

Many St. Louis officers say they should have a choice in where they live, especially when the quality of schools is a major concern.

The bill now moves to the full House.
