Jefferson City, Mo. – A Missouri lawmaker wants the state to help pay in car-versus-deer accidents.
State Rep. David Pearce (R-Warrensburg) is sponsoring a measure to make the Conservation Department pay the first $250 in damage to owners of cars that hit a deer. Pearce says it's the agency's fault there are too many deer.
There are about one million deer in Missouri; last year there were more than 5,000 car accidents involving wild animals. One of those included Pearce himself, whose van sustained more than $2,000 damage after hitting a deer.
