St. Louis, MO – Former Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog is recovering from successful quadruple heart bypass surgery this morning. He had the operation yesterday after a stress test found some arties with 90% blockage.
Herzog managed the Redbirds to their last World Series championship in 1982. He led the Cards to three N.L. pennants in the
1980s.
Herzog resigned from the Cardinals in 1990, but has had several offers to return to baseball since.
In December 2001, he turned down a chance to join the Boston Red Sox as a bench coach, and he was offered the Red Sox managing job in 1997.
