Chesepeake, MO – Two people died early this (Wed.) morning as violent storms moved through southwest Missouri.
One of the victims was in a mobile home park in Chesapeake, near Springfield. The whole park was leveled by an apparent tornado. The other death was also in the Springfield area, near Kenoma.
The victim in Chesepeake was a 47-year-old woman who lived in a home just south of the Lucky Lady Mobile Home Park.
Authorities say her husband was blown out of a window into a field; he was being treated at a Springfield hospital.
Lawrence County Sheriff Doug Seneker says two of the 15 injuries are serious but none life-threatening. He says 14 of the injured were residents of the mobile home park.
Seneker says one of his deputies was at the entrance of the trailer park when he heard the roaring sound and saw the apparent tornado coming through the mobile home park, throwing everything in
all directions.
In Barton County, farther to the north and west, emergency management officials say one person was killed and five people injured by an apparent tornado.
The person killed there was a young woman in her 20s who had been married only about a week.
At least two homes, one mobile home and
some outbuildings were destroyed. Nothing was left of the mobile home where the woman and her husband lived, except debris and a couple of vehicles parked in the
drive.
About five miles away, a modular home was destroyed and the second floor of a two-story house across the road was blown away.
A man and his son who lived in the modular house were both being treated at a hospital for injuries. Neighbors said the son had been found in a ditch.
Larry Abshier of Empire District Electric says crews were working to restore electricity lost due to the storm. He says about half a dozen utility poles in the area had been snapped off.
