This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, Oct. 15, 2011 - Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan collected only $3 in cash donations between July 1 and Sept. 30, underscoring that she likely had made up her mind not to seek re-election some time before her Sept. 30 announcement.
Including in-kind contributions, Carnahan collected $362 during the last three months and spent $7,841.14 during that same period, according to her latest campaign report due Saturday.
Since the beginning of the year, she had raised only $14,166.81 and spent $237,178.99
She still had $203,002.39 in her bank account when she announced her plans to forego a 2012 campaign. Carnahan has not said what she plans to do with the money.
At least three Republicans and one Democrat have declared their strong interest in the contest. Two of them, Republican Shane Shoeller and Democrat Jason Kander, declared their leanings after Carnahan's announcement.
Meanwhile, no Republican has announced plans to run for state treasurer -- but incumbent Democrat Clint Zweifel is continuing to amass cash as he waits for an opponent to emerge. (The most likely Republican is state Sen. Brad Lager, R-Maryville, who narrowly lost to Zweifel in 2008.)
Zweifel reports raising $219,216.88 during the past three months, part of the $1.01 million he has raised since taking office in 2009.
He reported spending $37,749.33 during the past three months and $316,630.31 overall. Zweifel's cash on hand: $720,656
