Chicago – The Illinois House goes back to work today after a two-week break.
Lawmakers will try to pass a budget after failing to do that during the regular session.
House Democrats have until the end of the month to pass a spending plan; after that, they'll need Republican support.
Despite a $13 billion deficit, Governor Pat Quinn says he hopes to have a spending plan by the end of the week.
"There are some legislators who want you to spend more money on certain programs," Quinn said. "Other legislators say, without specificity, cut the budget. And what we're trying to do is make sure we have lots of cuts. There's no question that I've cut the budget more than any governor in state history."
Quinn said he wants to borrow $3.7 billion to help fund the state's troubled pension system.
He stopped short of saying he'd veto a budget that doesn't include his borrowing plan.
