Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri House has passed a resolution opposing the federal Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), which could overrule state laws that restrict access to abortions.
The resolution was sponsored by State Representative Bob Dixon (R, Springfield). He says if the Freedom of Choice bill passes Congress, abortion rates will go off the charts.
"Any effort we extend toward stopping FOCA truly, in fact, does continue Missouri's rich traditions of reducing abortion and protecting women and families," Dixon said.
Opponents say passage of the resolution would send a message to the rest of the nation that Missouri opposes attempts to protect a woman's right to choose, even if her health or life is in danger.
State Representative Chris Kelly (D, Columbia) spoke against the resolution opposing the Freedom of Choice Act.
"Take it to the bank...the only thing that will change the tragedy of abortion is strong and forthright support for birth control," Kelly said.
The Missouri Senate has a similar resolution awaiting debate.
