Census figures show drop in health coverage following Missouri Medicaid cuts

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis – The first figures to reflect the effect of 2005 statewide Medicaid cuts show the number of uninsured Missourians increased by more than 103,000 last year.

That's according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau Tuesday.

Timothy McBride is the director of health policy at Saint Louis University's School of Public Health.

He says people who lost Medicaid coverage most likely became uninsured.

Census figures show 40,000 people lost employment-based insurance coverage and more than 60,000 others lost Medicaid coverage.

The numbers show those people did not get alternative health insurance.
