Callaway Nuclear Plant passes annual inspection

By Marshall Griffin, KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – Ameren's nuclear power plant near Fulton, Mo. has passed its annual inspection.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave the Callaway Nuclear Plant a "green" in almost every performance and inspection category, the best rating possible.

The plant received a "white" rating - slightly worse - in the category rating the performance of the auxiliary feed-water system.

However, that issue was addressed in a supplemental inspection, according to the NRC's Nelson Gaddy. "We looked at all the root causes of the problem, and we're satisfied that the licensee had taken corrective action," he said.

Gaddy says auxiliary feed water would be used to cool down steam generators in case of an accident.

The Callaway Plant supplies electricity to both Central Missouri and the St. Louis metro area.
