Valley Park aldermen repeal immigration ordinance

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – Aldermen in the St. Louis suburb of Valley Park have repealed a controversial ordinance dealing with illegal immigration.

A law on the books there had required the city to verify the citizenship of anyone wanting to rent property in the community.

But Monday night, aldermen voted 7 to 1 to remove that language from the city's housing code.

It's not clear if Mayor Jeffery Whitteaker intends to approve the change.

Immigrant rights advocates, several landlords, and the ACLU sued Valley Park over two previous measures aimed at illegal immigrants.

And last week a St. Louis County judge issued a permanent restraining order against those laws, even though the city repealed them several months ago.
