MO House approves heating assistance money

Jefferson City, MO – Lawmakers in the Missouri House on Thursday moved with unusual speed yesterday in approving more money for a state-run heating assistance program.

Utilicare helps low-income Missourians pay their heating bills.

The House approved putting $6 million in that fund to supplement tens of millions of federal dollars already there. State officials say they think that federal money might run out in February.

It would mark the first time in five years that state money has been put into the fund, though the legislation to do that still needs approval in the Senate. Governor Matt Blunt lauded the House for moving so quickly to pass the measure, which he would expectedly sign if it reaches his desk.
