Missouri State Senators pulled an all-nighter on Monday night and voted at about 6:30 Tuesday morning to change the name of Southwest Missouri State University.
The campus wants to be known as just "Missouri State University." The vote in the Senate (23-7) was only an initial approval; it needs one more final vote before the legislation can move to the House.
Opponents filibustered, in part, because they feared the effect of the change on the University of Missouri. But UM President Elson Floyd asked the top opponent (Senator Chuck Graham) to end the filibuster early Tuesday morning.
Some staffers say it was the longest debate in Missouri Senate History, but it wasn't all just about the name change.
