Simon Lusky, team chef for the St. Louis Cardinals and owner of Athlete Eats on Cherokee Street, plans to start operating a food truck and open a new restaurant in Brentwood.
And, as reported by our partners at Sauce Magazine, the restaurant will re-brand as Revel Kitchen. The food truck will be called Revel Kitchen Food Truck and will debut at the magazine’s Food Truck Friday on May 8.
Lusky started with the St. Louis Cardinals as an intern several years ago and later became the team’s first official chef.
“My kitchen is actually right down in the clubhouse. You’re around the guys all day,” Lusky told “Cityscape” host Steve Potter last April. “We’re working with the players...and seeing if there’s any way we could help them through food.”
Lusky was a guest last April on Sound Bites, a monthly segment produced in partnership with Sauce Magazine. And, while Sauce Magazine reported the news of Lusky’s plans to open a new restaurant and food truck last October, Lusky received a boost earlier today with a story in the New York Times.
“There’s this kind of stigmatism still within baseball that the food is just really bad for the players. But it’s slowly changing,” he said.
Lusky grew up in Pittsburgh in what he described as a foodie family. “I’ve been cooking since I could reach the counter,” he said.
He knew from an early age he wanted to make food his career. “I went to vocational school when I was in high school and started the early path into culinary arts,” he said.
Lusky would later earn a bachelor’s degree in culinary arts from Johnson and Wales University. That allowed him to combine his passion for food and sports, he said.
“Food can change your mood and make your day better,” Lusky said. And, that’s a philosophy appropriate for athletes and non-athletes alike.
