Ken Botnick Creates Books As Art

Courtesy of Ken Botnick

When someone asks Ken Botnick what he does, the answer is not an easy one.  As a typographer, he is at the same time a designer, craftsman, printer and publisher, and if that isn’t enough, he is also a Professor of Art and Director of the Nancy Spirtas Kranzberg Studio for the Illustrated Book at the Sam Fox School at Washington University.  The focus of his artistic endeavors is the creation of limited edition books.

Botnick’s work can be seen in collections all over the world, including The Library of Congress, The Getty Center for Humanities, The Bodleian Library, The Newberry Library, the Yale Arts of the Book Collection and other notable collections. But his first solo exhibition in St. Louis opens tonight at Craft Alliance’s Delmar National Gallery.  "Ken Botnick: Typographies - Craft as a Pathway Towards Humanity" includes works that bridge traditional and contemporary techniques, and function as both books and sculptures.  Among them is a book of poetry by St. Louisan Mary Jo Bank that features a cover made of lead on which the letters of the title are hammered.

Ken Botnick was Steve Potter’s guest on “Cityscape” and explained his thoughts on the meaning of craft and described what makes his books art.
