EPA, Kellwood reach settlement over contamination
St. Louis-based Kellwood Company has agreed to a plan to clean up the site of former metal fabrication plant in Franklin County.
The deal reached yesterday with the Environmental Protection Agency settles a suit filed last week by the EPA and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Kellwood is also required to pay past and future response costs for the state and the EPA.
An industrial solvent called PCE, or tetrachlorethlyene, has leached into the soil and groundwater at the site in New Haven, about an hour west of St. Louis. After the site was designated a Superfund in 2000, Kellwood agreed to install and operate water filtration systems for residents whose wells were contaminated with PCE.
12th District candidates will skip conventions
The two men hoping to fill the Congressional seat of the retiring Jerry Costello will not be going to their party’s conventions.
The campaign manager for Democrat Bill Enyart, the former adjutant general of the Illinois National Guard, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that a trip to Charlotte, N.C. is not on the calendar, and likely won’t be. And an aide for Jason Plummer said the Republican candidate has no plans to go to Tampa for the Republican National Convention.
The two join candidates from the Missouri side of the river who made the same decision, including Sen. Claire McCaskill and Sarah Steelman, a former state treasurer running in the Republican primary to challenge McCaskill.
Voter registration deadline is today
If you want to vote in the August primary – you have to register to vote by today.
Registration can be done in person or by mail. An application sent via the postal service must be post-marked by today.
The main races on the August ballot include the GOP primary for US Senate, and an increasingly nasty contest between two incumbent Democrats – William Lacy Clay and Russ Carnahan – who are battling in the 1st Congressional District.
