Regular readers of the St. Louis Post Dispatch are familiar with the byline of Aisha Sultan. She began writing a regular column in 2008 on parenting and family life called Dirty Laundry.
Sultan, a mother of two and wife, now hosts online conversations in which she engages with readers about various topics. Her column will begin in national syndication this fall.
Sultan doesn’t consider herself an advice columnist. “I see my role as someone who is observing what is happening not just within our families but in our society as it relates to families…and being able to say something about that and have an opinion about it,” Sultan told host Don Marsh.
“You let people know that they’re not alone,” she said. “I come from the perspective that parents are the ones that make decisions for their children up until a certain age and we are the ones guiding their development. You’re the one in charge and I think there’s a moment in which we forget that.”
Marsh and Sultan talked about a variety of issues including expensive proms, the intersection of parenting and technology and a new study by the Pew Research Center about breadwinner moms which shows four in ten women are the sole or primary provider of their households.
