Jazz Unlimited for Sunday, June 21 will be “The Music of Charles Mingus.” Bassist, composer and bandleader Charles Mingus was born in Nogales, Arizona, raised in Los Angeles and was part of an experimental music scene in the late 1940’s that developed around Lloyd Reese. At the time, he had no peers who had his technique. We will hear some of his early music, some of his compositions and some of his compositions played by others. In addition, we will debut two of his recently discovered compositions. Some of the groups highlighted include the Charles Mingus, Quartet, Sextet, Octet, the Tijuana Moods group, the Black Saint and Sinner Lady group. The Gunther Schuller Orchestra and the Mingus Big Band will also interpret his compositions.
The Slide Show has my photographs of two of the musicians heard on the show.
The Archive for this show will be available until the morning of June 29, 2915.
