St. Louis – U.S. Senator Kit Bond has put to rest a rumor that he plans to leave the Senate to take over as president of the University of Missouri system.

President Elson Floyd is leaving Columbia to become president of Washington State University.

After Floyd announced his departure last month, the internet blog Wonkette said that University of Missouri curators were considering Kit Bond for the job.

But the Senator said that's not true. He said those behind the rumor probably just want him out of the Senate.

"Nobody had a thought of offering it to me, and I had no thought of asking for it," Bond said. "How many times do you need to kill that dead dog? I ain't going there. And for those people who want me out, you missed your chance in '04."

Bond said he does not know who exactly started the rumor.
